On September 4, 2024, the Salón Don Augusto of the Hotel Raíces in Curicó was transformed into a vibrant forum for cultural and academic exchange with the "Fairtrade Wines of Chile and Argentina Workshop". This event, organized in the framework of the National Wine Day, was the result of a collaboration between the Catholic University of Maule, the Latin American and Caribbean Coordinator of Small Producers and Fair Trade Workers (CLAC), and the Trade Association of Small Producers Fairtrade Movement Chile.
Academic and Collaborative Context
The workshop is a highlight of the "Fair trade for rural development: a contribution from teaching at UCM" outreach program, managed by the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. This program is designed to integrate fair trade into the academic and practical training of future professionals, emphasizing sustainability, cultural heritage and social responsibility in agricultural practices.
Detailed Workshop Program
The day began with the accreditation of participants, followed by an opening ceremony led by key figures such as Claudio Fredes, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences at UCM, Felipe Zuñiga, and Jorge Burgos. This act set the tone for the event, focusing attention on the importance of fair trade practices and sustainability in viticulture.
In addition, a documentary entitled "El Arte del Cultivo de las Vides Centenarias del Secano", produced by Cristian Yañez and the Principal Investigator of the ATE230028 ring project, Dr. Ximena Quiñones, was presented. This documentary is a vital bridge between traditional viticultural practices and sustainability by highlighting the preservation of ancient cultivation techniques that are both ecologically and culturally rich.
Dr. Pablo Lacoste, from the University of Santiago de Chile, gave a presentation delving into the wine heritage of Chile and Argentina, exploring how the winemaking traditions of both countries contribute to the cultural diversity and sustainability of the sector.
Tasting and Awards Activity
One of the most anticipated moments was the guided tasting of Fairtrade wines, where wines from certified organizations from Chile and Argentina were highlighted. This session not only allowed participants to appreciate the quality of the wines, but also to understand the positive impact of Fairtrade on viticulture. The day culminated with an awards ceremony and a celebratory cocktail, enlivened by singer Carolina Díaz Sepúlveda, in an atmosphere that celebrated both the wine heritage and fair trade initiatives.
Impact of the Rings and Cultural Connections Project
This workshop is part of the ANILLOS project (ATE-230028), which explores and promotes sustainable eco-cultural practices in rural communities in the face of climate change. By integrating these efforts with fair trade and sustainable viticulture, Universidad Católica del Maule not only promotes a comprehensive education, but also fosters the economic and cultural development of the region.
Conclusion and Future Outlook
Holding this workshop on National Wine Day not only reaffirmed Universidad Católica del Maule's commitment to sustainable development and high quality education, but also established a model for future collaborations between academia and the wine industry. This event strengthens community ties and promotes the conservation of cultural heritage in Chile and beyond, marking a significant milestone in the history of the university and its impact on the community.
